Rent Officer for Northern Ireland

The Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 came into effect on 1 April 2007.  This legislation creates a new structure for the private rented sector in Northern Ireland.  This includes a new system of rent control and a range of requirements which apply to all private tenancies commencing after 1 April.
All registered tenancies can be viewed on the online Rent Register.

Under Article 55 of the Private Tenancies (NI) Order 2006, the Department for Social Development has accepted the recommendation of the Rent Officer, that the rentes of fit protected and statutory tenancies should be increased.  The Registered Rents (Increase) Order (Northern Ireland) 2009 outlines the percentage increase to be applied to tenancies registered:
The effective date of the increase is 19 October 2009.
Letters have issued to all landlords and agents of fit protected / statutory tenancies on the Rent Officer's database.
BEFORE ANY INCREASE TO THE RENT CAN BE APPLIED A LANDLORD MUST GIVE 4 WEEKS WRITTEN NOTICE TO THE TENANT.
